Award-Winning Events
Can you imagine planning the nitty gritty details of a rally for 75,000 people in downtown Montreal? For Michael
Caplan, President and Creative Director of special event firm Sensix Communications & Events Inc., it was a reality.
Hired by The Coalition of Suburban Mayors, a group protesting the City of Montreal's planned merger of 26
municipalities, and Montreal-based Pyramid Public Relations, Caplan was given seven days to pull off what many would
call a logistical nightmare. The event included several kilometres of street closings, parking for 800 buses, live
television coverage and a communications network.
Sensix's successful execution of the rally earned the Montreal-based company an award for "Most Outstanding Logistical
Achievement", which was one of six awards Sensix received at the fourth annual Canadian Event Industry Awards in Toronto
in March.
Caplan's most prestigious award was "Producer of the Year", for having produced the 'best collection of unique and
creative events over the past year'.
Other awards presented to Sensix include:
| - |
"Best Opening Ceremony", produced for a global electricity conference;
|
| - |
"Best Entertainment Produced for a Corporation", and "Most Outstanding Event"
won jointly with BC Event Management and its president David Clark (who
was executive producer of the events), for an evening called "The Four
Seasons of Canada" executed for a large Japanese incentive group in
Vancouver. The evening featured a combination of Megaprojection, which
projected moving images of the four seasons on three walls in the dining
room during the meal, lasers, special effects and entertainment; and

"Best Media Event", in collaboration with Pyramid Public Relations.

Despite planning such large and diverse events, Caplan says all of his events are based on the same principles.
"Our approach is to break everything down into bite-sized pieces and deal with it that way, and have the right
people dealing with each area of responsibility," he says. "And make sure there is excellent communication between
all the people responsible for the various areas."
Is there a secret to producing stellar events? Caplan says life-long learning. "I'm always open to other people's
suggestions, and I think that's key because there are a lot of people out there with great ideas who can contribute.
We invite participation form our partners on every project."
